A Message from the President (June 2024)

Welcome to June!

If you are anything like me you had a moment where you were blown away that May has gone past and we are nearing the “longest day” of the year! Our household has been stocking up on Vitamin D while getting the yard, garden, windows, and other spring/summer chores tackled, while also maximizing the fun! I think that is where May disappeared to…

Part of the May fun was the start of our Wednesday Night Track Workouts. The turnout has been excellent and we are seeing new faces, all ages, and all abilities showing up and “grinding the gears!” We recalibrated to the track with 200 meter repeats, gathered some data with a 10 Lap Time Trial, worked on shifting pace with 300/100s, bailed to a Rail Trail Negative Split on a scorcher of a night, and finished off May with “The Michigan” to get a baseline measure on speed, recovery, and endurance. Looking forward to June and continuing to see attendance grow with fewer mid-week commitments as school goes out of session.

In taking on a leadership role with the Monadnock Regional Milers, we had vision for connecting our community club back into the Community. We are off to a good start this year and June has me excited too! Our first MRM Book Club will be meeting at Divine on Main, combining a few of my favorite activities together - running, reading, and relaxation!  And we are adding a new standing weekly run that is going to be led by Jon Blair. Jon is co-owner of Lifelong Athlete and one of our Annual Club Sponsors. Details on both of these events are below! We have also connected to our community on a more global level through a program called Sneakers4Good, which takes used sneakers and sends them to Third World Countries to be recycled and put back into use. So far we have sent over 30 pairs of sneakers, how cool!

I hope you all continue to take advantage of this beautiful weather, long days, and the simple pleasures of summer in New England!

See you on the Track & Trails!

Becka Lyons

The other co president Becka Lyons has been running since the 5th grade, joining the high school cross country team in the 7th grade to be coached by Mike Smith when the middle school team didn’t have enough participation. Under Smith, Becka learned not only the ins and outs of running and won the 2006 Division 3 XC Championship Team title, but also all of the life skills that go with it; perseverance, goal setting, determination, and grit just to name a few. It would be those life skills that carried her from Mascenic Regional High School onto Quinnipiac University to earn her Doctorate of Physical Therapy and eventually open her own PT clinic with her husband, Elevation Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab in Peterborough, NH. Combining her passions for running and therapy, Becka held the Assistant Coach position for all things running at Mascenic for the last 4 years, bringing home both a boy’s and girl’s Division 3 team titles (only other Girl’s title since 2006!). When not at Elevation PT, Becka is usually found on the trails with her husband and black lab, gardening, or curled up with a book and a cup of tea.
