March 2nd is the 12th eighth annual Dead Possum half marathon, New Ipswich's hilliest half marathon-fest. Also included are the 5.5 mile and 8 mile options for those that can't handle a real contest.
Race time will start at high noon, when all dubious enterprises get going. There will be a post race Soupalpooluza to follow and everyone is encouraged to participate in that.
The race headquarters/starting area is 36 Fairbanks road. The 5.5 mile option drops you at our first water stop. The second 8 mile option has you cutting the course and heading straight back to race HQs from the 6.5 mile mark.
We love the unexpected, so feel free to share this with anyone foolish enough to follow your advice/think you know a good thing when you see it. Please reach out with any questions.
Race history: The original race was part of a half marathon every weekend in the month of October somewhere around 13 years ago. When we ran the course, we came across three dead possums, two beside each other, one up the street. An obvious marsupial love triangle gone wrong. Anyway, the Dead Possum was born that day out of that tragedy.
Going forward, I recognized that the time between the end of indoor track and the beginning of outdoor track was a difficult stretch for even my most dedicated athletes to negotiate. However, put a goal out there and things become a little bit easier. So the transition to a March Dead Possum happened the next year.
